Moreover, the association with α-thalassemia (α-thal), which also modifies erythrocyte behavior, has not always been taken into account. We assessed the prevalence of dyslipidemia and its association with glucose metabolism status in a representative sample of the adult population in Spain and the percentage of subjects at guideline-recommended LDL-C goals. Plasma lipids and lipoproteins were measured in 21 post-menopausal women after 4 and 8 months of continuous treatment with an orally administered combination of oestradiol and medroxyprogesterone acetate. The mean concentrations of cholesterol and low-density-lipoprotein (LDL) cholesterol were reduced by 12% (P less than 0.001) and 11% (P less than 0.01), respectively, after 4 months of treatment and by 9% (P less than 0.05) and 12% (P less than 0.05) after 8 months. In this study both normolipidemic elderly and middle-aged women with CHD showed higher triglycerides and apolipoprotein B levels and lower high-density lipoprotein (HDL)-cholesterol and apolipoprotein A-I levels in comparison with age-matched subjects without CHD. Results of a study of plasma lipids levels and lipoprotein pattern modification during digestion in sea bass indicate that, after feeding, non-esterified fatty acids are rapidly delivered in plasma, while triglycerides reach a maximum concentration only 24 h later. The time-course change of the lipoprotein pattern shows a relationship between their concentration and the lipid class carried.

This study evaluates the relation of a Mediterranean dietary pattern and its individual components with the cardiovascular risk factors profile, plasma glucose and body mass index (BMI) in people with type 2 diabetes. We studied 2568 participants at 57 diabetes clinics. Diet was assessed with the EPIC (European Prospective Investigation into Cancer and Nutrition) questionnaire, adherence to the Mediterranean diet was evaluated with the relative Mediterranean diet score (rMED).
